CIRCUIT 9

The Cellet

Departure: Tourist Information Office, Multi-activity House

Take the road to Petit Paradis which you will follow to the end

1. Cross the D417 and take the path opposite which goes down near the restaurant "Le Chant du Bois". Cross the Cleurie by the iron footbridge and take the path to the left then follow the road to the Basse again on the left.

2. At the next fork, near the Preuveux bridge, follow the Goutte Villemin road to the right, 200m further you will come to a fork, take the Cerceneux road, the furthest to the left and follow it for 400 meters, then go up the Goutte des Fromages road to the right.

3. At the top of the steep slope, you will have a superb panoramic view of the entire valley from Le Tholy to Hohneck, passing by Rain Brice, Beillard and the heights of Gérardmer.

4. At the end of the descent, turn right, after the last houses, the road enters the forest and turns into a path. 200 meters further on, turn right at the fork and right again when you reach the Housseramont road.

5. You will see a calvary dating from 1720, it is one of the few that survived the French Revolution.

6/ Another 100 meters and you arrive at the Housseramont quarry. Be careful when crossing the truck lane. A tunnel has been dug under the forest path to allow the passage of the tread that brings the "all-run" to the quarry sorting station.

7. Once you have passed the mining site, all you have to do is follow the quiet forest path that runs alongside the Cellet stream. You will pass 2 steles on your left commemorating the memory of two soldiers from the French Commandos shot down by an enemy sniper during the liberation battle of 14 November 1944.

8. Another kilometer and you arrive at your destination: the Cellet crossroads. This is where you will see on the side of the road the "totem" which evokes the filming of the movie "Les Grandes Gueules" with Bourvil, Lino Ventura, Jess Hahn, Marie Dubois and so many others. A building was built on the edge of the stream on the ruins of the sawmill which was burned for the needs of the film. On your left, on the edge of the Cellet road, after the small bridge, there is another stele and 100 meters further on at the edge of the meadow, a monument built to the glory of all the fighters killed on this sad day. All you have to do is retrace your steps, or if you are very brave, continue straight towards the top of the hill or continue towards Gérardmer.
